Seventeen-year-old Deborah Geresadik was born in Eritrea and graduated from Bialik-Rogozin High School in Tel Aviv, in spring 2022.

I knew of ASO from school, friends, family, and almost everyone around me.

Since fall 2022, I have been studying sociology, anthropology, and African studies at Ben Gurion University (BGU). The university application process was difficult because of three key challenges:

Citizenship – I don’t have an Israeli identity number, so I couldn’t apply on the internet and the school thought I was out of the country. I applied again as an international student, and ASO with some BGU professors helped convert my status to an Israeli student.

Age – It’s uncommon in Israel to begin university at age 17, and though BGU said one can’t apply at age 17 at the end, they accepted me.

High School Diploma – I had not yet received my high school diploma because schools in Israel issue diplomas the year after graduation.

University life is a great experience because of the people you meet and what you learn. I’m eagerly awaiting more great experiences during my studies and what is in store! Yet, commuting from home in Tel Aviv on busses and trains is tiring.

The struggles I’m facing are practical, not unusual. For example, sometimes reading an article I find words that are hard to pronounce and remember. Also, I have difficulty concentrating, and it is essential to stay focused and not let my thoughts wander while studying.

Education provides stability, and it’s something no one can ever take away. Being well-educated and holding a college degree increases chances for better opportunities.

I haven’t figured it all out, but I’m working on a thorough plan for my life.
