Success Story: Ablel Welegbreal

Abel Welgbreal is a thirty-year-old from Eritrea. He got to Israel alone at a very young age in 2009. Based on a testing system he was taken by the Israeli government to a boarding school in Jerusalem. Abel was motivated to pursue higher education because of his background. He was surrounded by people who were pursuing higher education and had already acquired Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He knew that he wanted to take that path as well, and these people believed that he could achieve it.

Being very interested in humanitarian issues and societal topics and caring deeply about people he decided to study Social sciences and Humanities at the Open University in Jerusalem. Currently, Ablel faces financial struggles in his pursuit of higher education so he works to pay for his degree. However, he accumulated a lot of discipline in his life and successfully balances work and his studies. Thankfully, one of ASO’s supporters provided financial aid to the students in the Teen Mentor Project which partially supports Ablel’s tuition giving him significant relief.

Ablel is a very disciplined individual who dedicates hours to studying in order to overcome language difficulties. He also has the help of a volunteer friend who assists him in improving his academic language skills. Ablel looks forward to finishing his degree successfully and then pursuing a Master’s degree. He describes himself as someone who likes to learn.

To summarize, Ablel expressed his concern for the youth of the community. “It’s terrible what’s happening with the younger generation and the parents who neglect them. Let the parents go to places that have things to offer and look for something that will help their children’s future. To those who do not give up, look for either a degree or a profession and develop yourselves.”
