Success Story: Heaven Alem

Twenty-two-year-old Heaven Alem from Eritrea arrived in Israel in 2018 with her family. She left her home country at such a young age that she barely remembers anything about her journey through Egypt into Israel.

Upon arriving in Israel, she faced the challenge of the language barrier, making it difficult to adapt to the Israeli education system. However, she persevered, graduated high school, and is now pursuing a career in Nursing. Despite continuing struggles with the language barrier in her Nursing degree, especially regarding medical terms not commonly used in everyday Hebrew, she utilizes tools like Google Translate and reads extensively to improve her academic language skills.

Heaven is currently in her first year at Ramat Gan College. After finishing high school, she worked and saved for two years to pay for her tuition, but her savings were not sufficient. Despite not receiving scholarships, she is working hard to ensure she can continue her studies, which cost 28,000 shekels per year. Fortunately, she has received a partial scholarship, significantly relieving the financial burden.

Before she applied to Nursing Heaven understood the importance of time management. She had to learn how to manage her time between studying and working. However, studying this year has been especially challenging due to the current situation in the country. Learning through Zoom presents difficulties as she cannot ask questions, making the learning process more challenging.

Heaven chose to study Nursing because of her lifelong aspiration to be a nurse. She believes Nursing will benefit not only her home country or Israel but the whole world. Her long-term goal is to work in the emergency department. In 5 years she hopes to start working and making people happy.

In summary, Heaven shares a message to people who have dreams like her: “Go for it. College requires dedication because it is not like high school, especially in nursing, where extensive studying is necessary. The medical language can be challenging but don’t give up. Also, it is important to remember that there will not always be wins but even if you lose don’t give up and keep trying.
